Verizon had a great second quarter, its numbers are up

Verizon has posted its earnings report for the second quarter of this year (April-June), and things are looking very good for this particular carrier. All of the numbers it reported are up, some by a lot compared to last year’s Q2. In fact, this is its sixth consecutive quarter with double-digit growth in operating income and earnings.

The company added 1.4 million new postpaid subscribers. Interestingly though, only 304,000 of those were contracts for phones, compared to 940,000 in the year-ago quarter.

That’s because a whopping 1.15 million are actually tablets using a Verizon data plan. And it’s likely that most of those were activated by existing customers adding LTE-capable tablets to their contracts – which they can do starting at just $10 extra per month.

Verizon’s revenue for the second quarter was $31.5 billion, the highest it’s seen in over a year and a half. Its total operating income was $7.7 billion this time around ($1.01 earnings per share), which is 17.2% more than it got in 2013’s Q2.

The carrier now boasts 75% smartphone penetration for its postpaid plans, up from 72% last quarter.
